How to Ship My Car in Ohio

So you need to transport your car, truck, minivan or SUV..

Where to start? Obviously you'll want to know the cost to haul your vehicle up front so you can determine if you'd like to hire an auto transport company, but first, there are many variables to consider. Factors such as, where you'd like your vehicle picked up and delivered, how much it weighs (curb weight), time of year/season, does it start and drive, do you have the keys or is it inoperable.

You might begin by searching for terms like: auto transport, auto transport companies, auto transport services, car haulers, etc. These terms will give you a basic idea of who the national players are in the industry. But if you'd like to work with a smaller, local company that will provide you with the best auto transport service and pays attention to details that matter to you. If this is the case, you might consider searching for a local auto transport company in your state, for example Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Michigan, Kentucky or New Jersey or a region such as Long Island, NY or city like Columbus, Ohio.

Many people who ship vehicles from these states often send them to Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina or Tennessee. However, there are many shipping lanes that are popular and well traveled by car haulers and ones that are not. Keep in mind, unpopular routes can greatly impact the rate and transit time.

Once you contact a carrier or auto transport broker, you'll want to have some information prepared to give them for a quote such as:
The Make/Model of your vehicle
The Curb Weight - the vehicle needs to be empty when shipping
The VIN (Vehicle Identification Number - 17 characters of letters and numbers if produced after 1986)
License Plate
Pickup/Delivery Date - Is there any flexibility?
Does it need to be shipped in a covered trailer or is an open trailer acceptable?

Most likely the auto transport company will be able to give you an estimate. The next step is to talk payment terms. Some companies will require part or all of the payment up front and some will allow payment at the delivery. If you are a private shipper shipping your car once or twice and not a dealer transporting autos on a regular basis, you'll most likely be asked to pay up front once you've agreed on a rate.
