Moving a student out of state?

Many students like the convenience of having a car at their disposal while attending college, but getting their cars to their out-of-state campuses can present a problem. Most parents prefer not to have their children drive long distances alone. Transporting a car rather than driving it yourself is a safe and reliable option.

Start by getting a quote. You’ll need to provide some information such as:

  1. The Make/Model of your vehicle
  2. The Curb Weight - the vehicle needs to be empty when shipping
  3. The VIN (Vehicle Identification Number - 17 characters of letters and numbers if produced after 1986)
  4. License Plate
  5. Pickup/Delivery Date - Is there any flexibility?
  6. Does it need to be shipped in a covered trailer or is an open trailer acceptable?

The auto transport company will be able to give you an estimate and discuss payment terms. You will pay a deposit when the rate is agreed upon and the truck is dispatched, with the remaining balance paid either when the vehicle is picked up or at delivery.

Should you decide to ship a vehicle here are a few things to prepare your car for the journey:

  1. Clean the car both inside and out. This allows the driver to assess any pre-existing damage to your automobile.
  2. Remove personal items from the vehicle.
  3. If shipping any personal belongings with the car be sure they weigh less than 75 pounds and are packed well below the window line of the car.
  4. Make sure the car has a quarter of a tank of gas to allow for loading and unloading.
  5. Be sure someone over the age of 18 is present to release and accept the vehicle, provide keys to the driver and sign the initial and final inspection reports.
  6. Schedule your shipment at least three weeks ahead of when you need the delivery.
